But I just took my college prelim exams (admittedly really easy) while a sore throat tore me apart the longer the day went. Gah.

College is about learning how to learn without someone spoon -feeding the material to you. You happen to do this while improving your general knowledge so you can interact with other educated people in a civil manner and while learning a specialty.
A master’s degree is about learning how to implement a research program.
A doctorate is about learning how to implement your own research program.

college is about learning how to deal with life without someone holding your hand. Everyone should live at college. H aving to feed themselves and have clean clothes is too much for some people.
